I have contacted USSH and submitted an application form. They answered very rapidly and it seems the course is very good and can be customised to my needs, so I'm very happy :-)
For the room, you are right, we will see when I'll be in Hanoi. I agree Hanoi is pretty full of people, however last summer I really enjoyed being there and didn't feel cheated by the people... I suppose I managed to speak vietnamese enough to not be treated as a turkey
I checked the USSH, it would be almost 10 kms away from Hoan Kiem. I wanted to rent a bike in order to do a bit of sport everyday... Do you think it is too hard? We'll see as well when I arrive in Hanoi if I need to rent a motorbike instead.
